Rincon de la Vieja is a volcano which is 1.916 meters above sea level, stretching over 400 square kilometers of land. Its formation is due to the simultaneous explosion of several volcanic cones that grew and came together in a single mountain. They have identified nine separate sites of volcanic activity at the top of the mountain. One is active, the others are slowly being eroded by the elements.
Hot springs and geysers of steam are a common occurrence in this area. There are also lakes that contain sulfur dioxide, with layers of constant boiling steam. Thermal activity in the park in the rainy season increases the amount of water that continuously heats and evaporates.
Studies carried out in the park have documented 257 species of birds. There are also small populations of mammals such as deer, sloths, pumas and tapirs.
Rincon de la Vieja is located in the area northeast of Liberia, Guanacaste. This park can be accessed by taking a dirt road approximately 21 miles, where we recommend going on a shopping
